Biography

  • James Maguire James Maguire is an up and coming Irish motorcycle racer from Clones, Co. Monaghan, with big ambitions and a determination to succeed.

James' family have no previous racing experience, however they are all keen racing fans and work behind the scenes to give James the best help possible to achieve his goals.

James's first motorcycling experience came from a Yamaha PW80 which was bought for him by his parents when he was 11, to give him something to do around the farm during the summer evenings. Unfortunately this bike was stolen from a local garage where it was being repaired. Ironically it was this theft that led James into the world of mini-moto racing, when with the insurance money for his stolen bike he decided to buy a mini-moto and check out the Irish Championship. Such was the friendliness and excitement of this Championship, James and his family decide to take the slightly daunting step into racing in 2003.

During 2003 James competed in the Irish Junior Mini-Moto Championship where he would eventually finish 3rd overall in his maiden season, taking several race wins along the way.

2004 saw James promoted to the Senior Championship where he continued his winning ways until July when he was offered a test on an Aprilia RS125. This step up to a 'big' bike so soon for the then 14 year old James turned out to be a success and James immediately decided to turn his back on mini-moto racing. As well as several club races in England on his Aprilia, James competed in the final three rounds of the Irish Clubman's Aprilia Championship, where he had two best finishes of 3rd at Mondello Park.

During the Winter of 2004 it was decided by James's family that he should enter the Irish Clubman's 125GP class and the newly formed Irish Newcomers Championship in the 2005 season. An agreement was reached with former GP racer Alan Patterson, whereby Alan would provide James with a bike and much needed guidance. The results of this partnership speak for themselves, James finished 2nd overall in the Clubman's Championship with four wins to his name and James dominated the Newcomers Championship, taking 10 race wins during the season.

James Maguire 2006 saw James promoted to the Irish National Championship at the age of 16, where he had several podium finishes and finished 5th overall in the Championship despite missing three races during the season. As well as racing in Ireland James made his first foray into the British 125GP Championship in 2006. Of the six rounds entered in this Championship James scored points finishes in four of the rounds including a memorable 3rd place finish at Donington Park. These results were all achieved despite having to learn the tracks the same weekend as racing on them, and racing against the best 125 racing talent in Britain.

As the 2006 season was coming to a close James had the chance to travel to Jerez in Spain for the final round of the Spanish Championship. James was not over awed by the multitude of World Grand Prix riders and teams present at this spectacular event and Qualified on the front row for the 'B' race alongside a Seedorf Honda, a Lotus Derbi and a MA Master Aprilia, and finished the race in 6th position.

This result qualified James to start from the back row for the 'A' race, where he showed no fear of the factory teams on the first lap to make up twenty places and cross the start/finish line in 24th position. However it was not to be, and despite holding his position James suffered a mechanical failure on lap 12 and his race was over!

For 2007, James buoyed up by his performances in 2006, plans to win the Irish National 125GP Championship and in addition he hopes to return to both the British and Spanish Championships in order to further his experience at some of the best motorcycle racing tracks in the world.
