Short term effects
The short term effects of taking alcohol vary on the amount of alcohol consumed, the short term effects are physical. Short term effects of alcohol can range from uninhibited, irritating serious illness and/or even death. Here are seven different effects that happens to you when consuming alcohol.
Reduced Inhibitions
Once you consume alcohol your behaviour changes, the drinker becomes more likely to engage in activities they would otherwise not participate in e.g. sexual activity, drinking and driving, illegal drug use.
Loss of Muscle Control
When the blood alcohol level is at 0.10, slurred speech will likely be one of the physical effects cause by the intake of alcohol. Impaired judgement and poor coordination are short term effects of alcohol abuse that can cause the person to falls or be in an accident.
Blackouts and/or Memory Loss
Since alcohol depresses the brain's control mechanisms, due to blood alcohol levels increase, periods of time and certain situations and events may not be remembered afterward.
Vomiting
Alcohol adversely affecting a person's sense of balance and orientation can lead to a feeling of nausea. Excessive alcohol consumption can also result in the body attempting to protect itself by getting rid of the alcohol by vomiting.
Headaches and Hangovers
These short term effects of alcohol can be felt a few hours after consuming alcohol. Hangovers are partially due to the body becoming dehydrated due to alcohol consumption.
Coma
At a blood alcohol level of 0.50, a person is at risk for coma, a life-threatening condition. And at this level or higher, respiratory paralysis and death become very much a possibility.
